I view the child as part of a larger system which includes family, community, school, and culture. I am committed to working from an anti-racist perspective. I tend to take an active stance as a therapist, while offering a warm, supportive, down to earth, strength based, and practical approach. I have extensive experience providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other behavioral interventions for children and adolescents. I also offer parent support and guidance.
In my work with youth and families, I take the time to understand the causes and consequences of the emotional and behavioral distress, and then integrate different therapeutic techniques depending on what best suits my clients. I prioritize the development of trust and then within the context of this therapeutic relationship teach the skills necessary to make lasting changes.
I work with children, adolescents and families coping with a range of adjustments and life transitions. My specialties include:
Our work together will begin with a 60 minute intake in which I gather a history and we discuss what brought you to my office. Usually, this involves the parent(s) and child together. However, there are times when it may be more appropriate to only meet with the parent(s) first- we will discuss this when setting up the first appointment. Usually when working with younger children, I work closely with the parents to tap into their insights as well as enhance their parenting skills. With teens, parents can be less directly involved so that the teenagers feel they have a safe space in which they can express themselves. After our initial meeting, I will offer you my thoughts and recommendations and together we will develop a plan for your treatment. Individual sessions usually last 45 minutes; family sessions are 45-60 minutes.
Fees will be discussed during our initial conversation. I do not accept insurance directly, yet can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance company for out of network reimbursement (which is often 60-80% of the fee).
